Considering that it was really just a simple farewell dinner for friends, it was rather surprising when the moment hit that night when we realized we were watching a small piece of history. With the couch stuffed to the max, we snuggled up to cheer on Michael Phelps as he swam his way to his eighth gold medal in the Beijing Olympics.
Earlier in the evening the girls and I had captured our own moment as Lisa and I say, "Aloha" to Shannon and her family. Here's to the sweet history of spontaneous backyard gatherings, communal grilling, blue margaritas, outdoor movies, chat sessions at the fence, and the well beaten path to a friend's door. It is a special blessing when some of your closest friends just happen to be those who live closest to you.
